Joanne’s a finalist in the Gosford Art Prize

Joanne from Aruma’s Bundoora home in Victoria, was recently named a finalist in the prestigious Gosford Art Prize. Her acrylic painting featured one of her favourite subjects, cats, and she is thrilled to have her piece on show in the gallery.

“We’re so proud of Joanne for following her passion and expressing herself creatively. She absolutely loves cats and this piece was inspired by her cats, Carmen and Pebbles. Carmen has passed away, but Pebbles is still with us. All four of Joanne’s housemates love Pebbles,” said Aliscia Braid, House Supervisor.

For the past five years, Joanne has attended weekly sessions at Arts Project Australia which was where she found out about the competition. The competition is hosted by the Gosford Regional Gallery in New South Wales and aims to celebrates the diversity of artists both on the Central Coast and beyond.

“Joanne loves to paint with acrylics and also enjoys embroidery. She has always been a creative and it runs in her family. They have been incredibly supportive of her artistic talents and are really proud of her recent achievement,” shared Aliscia.

Joanne’s mother, Jean Goldberg, was a finalist in arguably the most prestigious art prize in Australia, the Archibald Prize (1961). The entry now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.

Joanne’s brother Stephen said, “in a way, it seems she is following in her mother’s footsteps.”

This is not the first time that Joanne’s work has been displayed to the public, she has been a part of group shows in Melbourne and her work is also held in private collections. She’s also currently got several pieces for sale if you are after some new art.

Aliscia said that more than a talented individual, Joanne is an absolute joy to be around, always living life to the fullest.

“Joanne has been with Aruma for 10 years. She’s a very independent woman and she’s just amazing. Joanne really is a gift to this world,” she said.
