Helping kids ‘communicate their way’ this Speech Pathology Week

This Speech Pathology Week we're highlighting the importance of Early Childhood Intervention.

No matter how you communicate, whether it’s verbal, signed, through a device, or written, communication is a part of everyday life. “Communicate your way” is the theme for this year’s Speech Pathology week hosted from 25 – 31 August.

Approximately 1.2 million Australians have communication support needs and 11% of those Australian’s are children. At Aruma, our team of speech pathologists work with children on their communication challenges and can tailor support to your child’s unique needs.

“Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) is fundamental for children who are showing signs of developmental delay which often includes communication difficulties. We offer a transdisciplinary approach and use a Lead Practitioner (the therapist working with you is a skilled professional in the area you want to focus on supporting you to achieve your goals) model to make sure children have access to a team of tailored supports, including speech therapy, occupational therapy and other health services they might need,” said Aruma’s Manager Therapeutic Supports, Bessie Loo.

Syrena Dunne has a background in Speech Pathology and is currently the Team Leader at Aruma’s Bayswater site in Victoria.

“Many families come to us when their children are displaying behaviours, showing sensory issues, struggling to regulate their emotions, or are presenting communication difficulties. Often these families experience challenges getting through daily routines.  It’s a very fulfilling role to connect children and their families to the right supports,” said Syrena.

Syrena began working as a Speech Therapist in 2004 and estimates that she has worked with thousands of families in that time. In her current role at Aruma, she is often the first contact that families have with the service and the first step in getting them started with intervention and supports.

“It can be really daunting for parents to start looking into ECI services but one of the key messages we want people to know is that there is no wrong starting point. If you’re not sure what your child needs that’s ok. Our team and your Lead practitioner will be there to make a plan with you around goals, strategies and helping make sure you and your child get the services that are just right for you,” said Syrena.

The team at Bayswater and Bundoora in Victoria currently have capacity to take on new Speech Pathology children and families. Aruma also offers speech therapy for children in Northern, Western and New England regions in New South Wales as well as in Brisbane, Queensland. Contact the team today on 1300 538 746 or enquiries@aruma.com.au to see how they can help.
